1. They Ask About Your Event Before Quoting
A good venue asks questions before giving you a number: guest count, format (standing or seated), timings, whether you need exclusivity. A venue that quotes a flat price without asking any of this either hasn't thought it through, or is quoting for a generic package that may not suit you.
2. You Get A Straight Answer On Exclusivity
“Private hire” means different things at different venues. Ask directly: will other guests or groups be in the building at the same time? Some venues offer “private hire” of a section while the rest of the bar stays open to the public — which is fine if you know that going in, but disappointing if you assumed the whole place was yours.
3. The Space Actually Suits Your Numbers
A venue built for 200 people will swallow a group of 30 and kill the atmosphere. A venue built for 40 will feel cramped and stressful with 80 guests. Ask about realistic capacity for your specific format — standing capacity is always higher than seated, and a good venue will be upfront about the difference.
The right-sized venue for your group will always beat the biggest, flashiest one — atmosphere is mostly a function of density, not decor.
4. They're Clear On What's Included
Before you book, get written confirmation of what's actually included in the price: bar staff, glassware, basic lighting, cleaning, and any minimum spend. Vague answers here almost always mean unexpected costs later.
